A GLIMPSE INTO A SHORT FILM FOR ARJOWIGGINS CREATIVE PAPERS

Last month, the SOME/THINGS team visited ARJOWIGGINS' Stoneywood Mill. Established by James Moir in 1770 on the banks of the River Don, Stoneywood was originally one of five paper mills in Aberdeen. Now the last remaining, it has the capacity to manufacture around 70,000 tonnes per year, producing 9,900 products including high quality luxury and creative papers from ArjoWiggins’ Conqueror, Curious Papers, Curious Metallics and Impressions ranges.

Since CHAPTER004, SOME/THINGS MAGAZINE has served as a communication tool for ARJOWIGGINS GRAPHIC and ARJOWIGGINS CREATIVE PAPERS, illustrating the versatility of their product ranges in the context of luxury publishing. Each issue of the publication features a variety of paper stock, using some of the most advanced printing techniques including four-colour print in random raster and spot colour offset, achieving near-photographic image quality within the magazine. SOME/THINGS also employs advanced production methods such as screen printing, foiling, embossing/debossing, glossy and matt UV lacquer, and matt laminating.

Furthermore, an ongoing partnership with IMPRIMERIE COMELLI and COMELLINK has ensured SOME/THINGS provides clients with the highest-quality printed matter, as well as pre-press production and retouching services, for artist books and monographs, invitations, lookbooks, and catalogues.

SOME/THINGS COLLABORATOR NICHOLAS ALAN COPE'S NEW BOOK

'I moved to Paris from Los Angeles 10 years ago and haven’t been back since. But this is exactly how I remember it. Bright hot incessant clear light, casting blackety-black shadows from Brutalist blocks that take the history of architecture and silently reduce and contain it like lunar tombs. Or Aztec temples morphed into foam-core cartoons.

This kind of light makes decisions easier, more black and white. Good vs bad, pure vs impure, aspiration vs collapse. Determined grim optimism vs self indulgent despair. The suggestion of an old Hollywood monolithic black-and-white movie set encourages self invention and self consciousness as you make your way down an imaginary long white staircase. There’s not another living soul on the set and the spotlight is on you, wiping out any flaw or imperfection, hallucinating yourself into who you wanna be...

Exactly how I remember it...

/ Rick Owens, November 2012

Los Angeles-based Photographer and regular SOME/THINGS collaborator NICHOLAS ALAN COPE's new book, WHITEWASH, captures the contrasts of the city through stark black and white images of L.A's architectural landscape. WHITEWASH, which is published by POWERHOUSE BOOKS and includes a foreword by Rick Owens, is available now through select stockists. For more information, visit cope1.com.
