THE SPACECRAFT PROJECT FOR SOME/THINGS CHAPTER006

Since CHAPTER005, SOME/THINGS has had a close relationship with creative duo DUSTIN EDWARD ARNOLD and NICHOLAS ALAN COPE. After first featuring their PUTESCO series, SOME/THINGS collaborated with COPE and ARNOLD for THE SPACECRAFT PROJECT in CHAPTER006, in addition to two exclusive articles for the upcoming CHAPTER007, for which more details will be released soon.

Based on a concept by Monika Bielskyte in collaboration with art director Dustin Edward Arnold, with photography by Nicholas Alan Cope, THE SPACECRAFT PROJECT reinvents the language of sci-fi using computer graphics and digital image manipulation to create otherworldly vehicles with an aesthetic scale that is rare even in motion pictures. EXCLUSIVE COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH INTEL IN CHAPTER006

FOR AN EXCLUSIVE COLLABORATION TO COINCIDE WITH THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MICROPROCESSOR, SOME/THINGS AGENCY WAS COMMISSIONED TO DEVELOP A NEW WAY TO PHOTOGRAPHICALLY REPRESENT ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY, EXPLORING INTEL’S HISTORY THROUGH VISUALLY ARRESTING IMAGES OF NEW AND ARCHIVE WAFERS AND CHIPS [SHOT IN PARIS, SILICON VALLEY, AND LOS ANGELES] AND EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWS WITH THEIR ANTHROPOLOGISTS AND FUTURISTS, INCLUDING WITH STEPHEN L. SMITH, BRIAN DAVID JOHNSON, & GENEVIEVE BELL. PUBLISHED IN SOME/THINGS CHAPTER006, THE FEATURE WAS THE RESULT OF GAINING UNPRECEDENTED COOPERATION FROM INTEL’S R&D TEAM

[...COMMON DENOMINATOR VS INDIVIDUAL / history has always been a dialogue between moments of extraordinary bravery and courage and brilliance and full-heartedness on the part of people who, for a better world or a different world, had a vision of how things could be. And then moments where it’s, in fact, a whole group of people standing up and saying it’s going to be something— whether they stand up and say it’s going to be the end of 30 years of rule in Egypt or we’re going to attempt to change the Chinese government or we’re going to overthrow the French aristocracy.

I am aware of people standing up to say ‘we like reality TV’ and the brave individuals and the full-hearted ones have run the gamut too— from politicians and activists and visionaries to pop stars. And you know, you can say, probably not unreasonably, that Elvis Presley changed the world. Would you argue that he was a visionary or a fine human being or that he had a fine vision? Maybe not, but I think it has always been a tension between visionaries and people who imagine other states and who are willing to just get up there and push for them.

I think we go through moments of lamenting the common denominator but we forget sometimes that when a country or a culture or a group of people decide to do things en masse it has an amazing impact. Whether it’s for good or for bad I think is a different question, but for me personally, you have to strive for excellence, you have to have a big vision. And I think you have to make room for there to be lots of points of view. I’m less interested in an elitist thing that says, ‘I know what’s best for everyone’. I want to make it possible for everyone to have something. But those things are always in tension...]
