FROM HIS FEET UPWARD INTO A LANDSCAPE OF FLAME / SOME/THINGS SECRET 7-9PM, November 19, 2010

SOME/THINGS inaugural exhibition, titled FROM HIS FEET UPWARD INTO A LANDSCAPE OF FLAME, will feature the work of photographers MARTIN D’ORGEVAL, JULIEN CLAESSENS, THOMAS DESCHAMPS, & MONIKA BIELSKYTE at the new SOME/THINGS gallery — SOME/THINGS SECRET — on November 19, 2010.

OPENS 7-9PM FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19, 2010 UNTIL JANUARY 16, 2011 [BY APPOINTMENT ONLY]
SOME/THINGS SECRET 16 VILLA GAUDELET 75011 PARIS

Following the launch of SOME/THINGS ISSUE003 / FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE in September, SOME/THINGS SECRET will act as a physical extension of the publication, exhibiting works featured within its pages as well as projects & pieces commissioned exclusively for SOME/THINGS by artists & designers.

Paris-based photographer MARTIN D’ORGEVAL will exhibit new work from his daguerreotype series, a collaborative project with Anna Pahlavi. Using a 19th century photographic technique, d’Orgeval’s daguerreotypes evoke visions of place— as they emerge from memory or from a more intuitive sphere. D’Orgeval’s Deyrolle taxidermy series was featured in ISSUE003; he has also collaborated exclusively with SOME/THINGS on a project featuring some of the most rare & sought after photographic books (including Yutaka Takanashi's Toshi-e, Richard Long's Labyrinth & Hiroshi Sugimoto's Sea of Buddhas). D’Orgeval is currently finishing work on a book about influential photographer Robert Frank, to be published by Steidl. His photography has been shown in the US, UK, Italy, Germany & France including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie & the Galerie Ghislaine Hussenot in Paris.

JULIEN CLAESSENS is a French photographer based in Belgium. His intimate photographs of his friends & lovers, bathed in dark light, convey an otherworldly humanism that is at once disturbing & sensual. Claessens is noted for his collaboration with designer OLIVIER THEYSKENS for Theyskens’ book The Other Side of the Picture, published by Assouline. It will be the first time his work is shown in Paris, after previous exhibitions at galerie le réverbère in Lyon & salon d'art in Brussels. France-based THOMAS DESCHAMPS’ photographs capture the seemingly lifeless & mundane details of everyday life, resulting in incredibly delicate & beautiful still lifes & ghostly interiors in shades of grey. Images by Julien Claessens & Thomas Deschamps, who have worked together for over 15 years, were featured in an extensive 22-page article in SOME/THINGS MAGAZINE ISSUE003 / FARWELL MY CONCUBINE.

Lithuanian-born artist, MONIKA BIELSKYTE will exhibit work from CHAPTER 2 of her project A PLACE TO WASH THE HEART, shot over the last four years in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Siberia, Peru, Chile & Bolivia. Featuring large format light boxes, video projections, & photographs taken in Potosí, one of the oldest silver mines in the world, 4000 metres above sea level & known for some of the most gruesome working conditions. The rich & exquisite colours resemble a Baroque depiction of human flesh & innards so common & brutally exacerbated in traditional South American Catholic religious art. Bielskyte, who has been based in Paris since 2005, has had work shown at Foam [Amsterdam Photography Museum], Vartai Gallery [Vilnius], Rencontres D’Arles, Paris Nuit Blanche, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre [Beijing], Royal Academy of Arts [London], & National Gallery of Art [Vilnius].

Contemporary art programs at SOME/THINGS SECRET are organised by Raina Lampkins-Fielder with the assistance of contributors, collaborators & the SOME/THINGS team.

In addition to a gallery, SOME/THINGS SECRET will operate as a private boutique, creative environment & showroom/studio for exclusive use by clients.

The space will host around six exhibitions per year with openings during Paris Fashion Week, FIAC & Paris Photo, as well as monthly music & performance events.
